The Philosophy of Ralph Cudworth: A Study of the True Intellectual System of the Universe

The Philosophy of Ralph Cudworth is a comprehensive study of the philosophical system developed by the English philosopher Ralph Cudworth. Written by Charles E. Lowrey, this book provides a detailed analysis of Cudworth's ideas on the nature of reality, the role of reason in understanding the world, and the relationship between God and the universe. Lowrey examines Cudworth's concept of the ""plastic nature"" of matter, which posits that matter has the ability to change and adapt to different circumstances. He also explores Cudworth's belief in the existence of an infinite and eternal God who created the universe and governs it according to rational laws. The book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, particularly the development of seventeenth-century British thought.1884. Lowrey's study is designed to present the principal features of philosophy as developed by Cudworth, who was an English philosopher and the leader of the Cambridge Platonists, in his great work, entitled The True Intellectual System of the Universe. The work took the form of a reply to the popular materialistic writer (and his nemesis), Thomas Hobbes; yet it was too Catholic in its spirit to escape the charge from the majority of contemporary theologians of being atheistic, heterodox, and heretical in its tendencies. Lowrey has designed his text in a form that is sufficiently comprehensive for the general student and properly introductory to a more extended investigation of Cudworth.
