The Philosophy of William Hamilton: A Study

"The Philosophy of Sir William Hamilton: A Study" provides a comprehensive and critical examination of the intellectual contributions of one of the 19th century's most significant Scottish thinkers. Svend Valdemar Rasmussen meticulously explores the complex philosophical system developed by Hamilton, focusing on his influential roles in logic, metaphysics, and the Scottish School of Common Sense. The work delves into Hamilton's key doctrines, including his theory of the relativity of knowledge and his ambitious efforts to reconcile classical philosophy with emerging Kantian perspectives.

Rasmussen offers a detailed analysis of Hamilton's logical innovations, specifically the quantification of the predicate, and examines his views on the limits of human understanding and the nature of the unconditioned. By situating Hamilton within the broader context of modern philosophy, this study highlights his profound impact on the development of psychological and epistemological thought. This volume is an essential resource for those interested in the history of ideas, offering a scholarly and objective evaluation of a philosopher whose work bridged the gap between traditional empiricism and the critical philosophy of the continent.
