Synopsis
AS THE PHOENIX FLIES is a story about two families from China that migrated to the new world. During their lives in China, they experienced unexpected difficulties and hardships. Because of their dedication and filial piety to their parents, some moved voluntarily. Others were forced to move. The families originated in China and due to unfortunate events in their lives, would choose to move to the land known for her opportunity, America. It is the story of two very different economical groups of people who would eventually unite and make a new life in the new world. There was a sense of duty for some to help their families that motivated them to move. These families who were selflessly dedicated to help their relatives back in China, moved their families to face the unknown. In Chinese folklore, the Phoenix is a symbol of heavenly favor, of pure virtue, and of beautiful grace. The Phoenix, the mythological bird, must first burn away into ashes before the bird can be renewed and rise again. The Phoenix, a sacred bird, is an inspiration to the Chinese people. The Phoenix is usually complimented with the dragon to provide the balance of yin and yang. The Phoenix struggles to rekindle the fire of hope in the people’s hearts. It rekindles their goal to start anew. In history, many empires have crumbled, and their ruins are a witness to their past grandeur. Empires are reborn with newness and freshness. Centuries will pass. The wild beasts and birds will return. The land will become fertile again. People will build new empires, whether a government or a family dynasty. These families unselfishly emigrated to integrate into a new environment, an unknown territory, and strived to make it into a better world. Like the Phoenix, they will rise from their ashes, with hope and desire. The families who left their homeland were virtuous, and with the blessing of the heavens they intended to start anew. And with hope in their hearts, they would build a new family dynasty. This was their dream. This was their hope. This was their desire.
About the Author
This book is dedicated to my ancestors who have given me hope through their many efforts and dedication. They have given me the desire to start anew. They have also given me the basis to start my story. This book is also dedicated to my soul-mate, Edgar. He has passed on to a better life, but he has always been my inspiration and my supporter in whatever endeavors I have pursued. He has encouraged me during his lifetime to sit down someday and write my story so that the world would know the difficulties that the families had to endure when they left their homeland and moved to Hawaii. Their struggles to make this into a better world. It is also dedicated to my children who have supported my eccentricities for many of their growing years, and my uncertainties as to what I wanted to do with my life. Thank you,. You have been and are my inspiration.
