The Phoenix Solution: Getting Serious About Winning America's Drug War

An analysis of the current drug policy in the United States reveals a disturbing level of ineptness in drug control practices and presents a program for bringing the drug crisis in our nation to an end. Tour.

Bugliosi (And the Sea Will Tell, Audio Reviews, LJ 2/15/92), who is best known for the prosecution of Charles Manson and his followers, here offers a very insightful critique of the "war on drugs" and proposes some rather radical solutions. His analysis of the government's efforts to stop the flow of illegal drugs into this country is interesting. However, the case he argues for the solutions to the crisis quickly becomes tedious, even in abridged form and, not surprisingly, comes across like a legal brief. The author's reading of the introduction is inspired and one wishes that, despite Joseph Campanella's excellent reading of the main text, Bugliosi had argued his own case.
