An amateur photographer s family photo album from New York City and Maine in the 1890s. The album is both a compilation of family photographs from extended members living in Farmington, Maine and of the city itself. The album features portraits of each of the members with several well composed photographs of the babies in the family. Although the album was purchased in 1914, as written on the shop sticker on the front pastedown, it s likely the photographs are much older. The families clothing is humble and slightly out of date for the time with very tight and form fitting garments in satin, heavier wools, and predominately dark colors. It s likely that the photographs are from the 1890s to fit the fashion seen in this album. Of the portraits, they are highly detailed and well shot, likely by an amateur photographer of the family. There are a few group pictures captioned "picnic party" and "idle times" showing the family, well dressed and out together. There are shots of the city, where the album itself was purchased at Folmer & Schwing MFG Company in 1914. Some include shots of the Washington Square Arch, the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, as well as other parks in the city. The outdoor and locations shots are aesthetically pleasing and well-composed, often with some catching an entire area, like some of the bridges in the city. Many photographs of the steamboats on the river are also seen. Other interesting shots around New York include a biking tour or marathon, pictures of the Revolution House in East Chester. Some shots of Farmington, Maine include small shots around the budding city and of the surrounding parks, churches, and homes. There are also shots of the family members, poised with shot guns and hunting dogs, caring for horses and cattle, and of the children dressed as sailors, soldiers, and in embellished and fancy dresses. A nice family album shot by an amateur photographer in the 1890s in Maine and New York City.
