About this Item
Oblong folio measuring 12.5" x 10". String-tied brown leather over stiff paper boards with "Aloha Hawaii" and a palm tree stamped on the front board. Contains 174 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs most measuring 3" x 4.5" with captions. Very good album with worn edges and rubbing with fine photographs. A photo album kept during a vacation in Hawaii in the 1930s. The album opens with photographs of a luau with hula girls dancing and playing ukulele. A band is pictured here with the dancers as well as people enjoying poi, posed in a canoe, and preforming a "uli uli dance." The local Hawaiians are photographed throughout the album fishing, working in fields, and selling at markets. Foliage and farms are seen as well with a photos of banana trees, coconut trees, and a pineapple field. One photo shows someone climbing a palm for fruit, another shows a native hut, and another shows a geyser named the spouting horn. The Hawaiian landscape is beautifully captured in well-composed photographs of the island including "moon light over Diamond Head" and a wonderful photo of surfers riding waters. They visited beaches, volcanoes, and waterfalls as well as a military camp on the Big Island. Also featured are municipal buildings such as City Hall, the Capitol, and the Post office along with views of city streets. The Royal Hawaiian band is featured here in a group photo on Oahu. A Trans-Pacific clipper plane from Pan Am is photographed in the water with planes flying overhead; another photo shows the ocean liner, the S.S. Lurline docked. A woman is featured in a grass skirt, shirtless, with a lei covering her breasts posed in cheesecake pin up style poses. A wonderful assemblage of images detailing the Hawaii islands in the 1930s.
