About this Item
Oblong folio measuring 14" x 9.5". Brown leather with gilt titles. Contains 371 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 8" x 10" with some captions. Good only album lacking the spine with worn edges and tears with very good or better photographs with some foxing. A photo album which acted as a yearbook style souvenir for the 1905 graduating class of Princeton University published by B.F. MacManus. It was owned by E.J. Waring of Plainfield, New Jersey who graduated that year and whose name is stamped in gilt on the front board. The first three pages of the album are portrait photographs of the professors of the university followed by pages of images of the young men of the class with each donning the subject's signature below it. Following that are group photographs from sports teams, musical groups, and clubs that gathered that year including the football team, hockey team, choir, theatrical group, and baseball team, among others. The other classes present during that year, Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors are pictured in group photographs of their entire class. The last few pages of the album show the campus including Alexander Hall, the cathedral, and Nassau Hall. Woodrow Wilson was in his third year as president of the college and had instituted the "preceptorial system" in 1905 which changed the format of large lecture classes to smaller groups of students. Noted members of the class of 1905 include Norman Thomas, "six-time Socialist presidential candidate," geologist Charles Henry Smyth, Jr., and missionary worker John Stewart Burgess. Waring went on to become treasurer and General Manager of Pyrene Manufacturing Company in New York. A nice collection of class photos from Princeton University. Seller Inventory # 417906
