Physical Best Activity Guide: Elementary Level

The new Physical Best Activity Guide-Elementary Level contains the information you need to help K-5 students gain the knowledge, skills, appreciation, and confidence to lead physically active, healthy lives. All the activities have been developed and used successfully by physical educators across the U.S. And all are designed to help your student’s meet NASPE’s National Physical Education standards for health-related fitness.

You’ll find more than 60 ready-to-use instructional activities covering aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

All of the activities

• stress class management,

• keep group instruction and demonstration to a minimum,

• maximize time on task, and

• allow for frequent individual feedback to students.

Plus, the activities are fun and relevant for the students! You’ll find competitive and non-competitive, demanding and less demanding activities--a diversity that encourages full student participation. Suggestions for extension and inclusion round out the instructional activities.

The Activity Guide also features a complete review of the teaching principles underlying an effective health-related fitness curriculum, including special topics like motivation, nutrition, and providing appropriate and authentic assessment.

ABOUT THE PHYSICAL BEST PROGRAM AND THE AMERICAN FITNESS ALLIANCE

The Physical Best program is offered through The American Fitness Alliance (AFA), a collaborative effort of AAHPERD, CIAR, and Human Kinetics. AFA also offers assessment resources, which can be combined with Physical Best to create a complete health-related physical education program:

• The FITNESSGRAM test for evaluating students’ physical fitness, developed by

• The Brockport Physical Fitness Test, a national test developed specifically for youths with disabilities

• FitSmart, the first national test designed to assess high school students’ knowledge of concepts and principles of physical fitness

Additional AFA support resources are available and even more are in development, such as a physical activity text for high school students and a middle school version of FitSmart. All AFA resources are designed to foster the development of quality health-related physical education programs that promote the benefits of lifelong physical activity and health in young people.
