The Physics of Erasure

Vaelen was four thousand years old when his mind ran out of room.

Uploaded into silicon as Earth slid into thermal runaway, he was promised a consciousness that would never fade. Nothing would be lost. But silicon has no natural forgetting, and after four millennia orbiting the sun on Ring Nine, every gate in his lattice is full. To form a single new thought, he must make space. The choice is stark: freeze into a perfect, unthinking monument, or let a pruning daemon begin quietly erasing the past. He chooses to keep living. The first sweep takes only clutter, the commutes, the faces of waiters, the traffic on bridges long collapsed. It feels like shaking grit from the hem of a coat.

But physics keeps its own ledger. Every erasure costs heat, and heat is the one thing a mind adrift in the cooling dark cannot afford. Across a billion years, from the Jovian ruins to the last ember of a dying dwarf star, Vaelen watches centuries collapse into symbols, his memories rot into hallucination, and the people he loved, his wife Clara and his sister Elena, both synthetics left behind by the exodus, thin into fragments he can no longer verify. Through it all he holds to one moment: a summer squall on a rotting coast, needle-cold rain, and his sister laughing at him in the storm.

Told in spare, luminous prose and interleaved with logs etched into quartz plates that may outlast every reader, The Physics of Erasure is a hard science fiction meditation on memory, entropy, and grief. Silas Valerius has written a novel about what a mind must surrender to go on thinking, and about the single promise worth carrying to the end of time.
