Synopsis

Understanding of polymer interactions is important for effective processing of plastics and their blends, mixing with nanoparticles, and understanding of their mechanical and physical (e.g., electrical) properties. This book describes a new physics of interactions in polymers that challenges existing theories, and explains the concept of entanglement in a very different way. Rheology is formulated with different parameters defining the physics of dual-phase and cross-dual-phase. The rubbery behavior of thermoplastics is explained quite differently to conventional theory. Rheo-fluidification experiments which are applicable to industry (injection molding, extrusion, sheet forming, etc.) are described and analyzed, including molding under conditions of reduced viscosity (up to several hundred percent). The application of this theory to industry has already been proven by a number of successful derived inventions.

About the Author

Prof. Dr. Jean Pierre Ibar is heading the New School Polymer Physics, a research and teaching center devoted to understand the interactions in polymers pursuant to the Grain-Field Statistics concepts that he started to develop in his PhD thesis at MIT in the mid-70s.
 
These ideas have grown into a new paradigm that can be directly applied to the rheology and processing of polymers in order to reduce their viscosity prior to and during processing. From the mid-1970s until 2006, he worked in the US in leadership roles at the start-up companies he co-founded, especially on the technical and research sides.
 
Since 2006 Dr. Ibar held academic positions in the US, France, and China teaching the art and adantages of using vibratory means to process polymers in shearing and pressure modes. His several patented inventions in this area are well used in the industry throughout the world. The dedication of Professor Ibar to explain quantitatively the "sustained-orientation"  paradox (the possibility to freeze-in pellets the reduction of viscosity by "disentanglement") resulted in the writing of "The Physics of Polymer Interactions", his first book in  a series of 6 dedicated to disseminate the theoretical and practical implications of the new paradigm.
