"The Pilot was the first of Cooper's sea novels and represented the invention of a new kind of fiction. Inspiration for the use of the sea as a subject for a novel came from Cooper's annoyance with Sir Walter Scott's seamanship in The Pirate and his determination to show what a real sea-faring man could do with maritime materials." -- Joan St. Clair Crane (1974).
