Synopsis
Learn best practices for UAV/Drone night flight, how to fill out 107.29 waiver applications (and what not to do), and understand the differences between day and night flight activities, whether for commercial or hobbyist use. Night flying has a higher accident rate than identical day flying, both in UAV and manned aviation. Why? Depth perception is severely distorted, as is reaction time. There are also visual illusions that need to be recognized and mitigated. This manual is designed for unmanned pilots to understand night flight theory: how to prepare the aircraft and flight techniques for night flight, how to acclimate eyes and avoid light contamination/pollution when lighting subjects, and most importantly, how to properly identify, assess, and plan for the risks associated with night flight. To best understand the difference between day sight and night sight, this manual details the physiological shifts when the pilot moves from day into night flights, illustrating how eyes work at night and why visual illusions (such as autokinesis and night landing illusions) occur. Find out how to fly your UAV / sUAS/drone at night – LEGALLY, SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY!
