Although the ocean provides living space for about 97 percent of life on Earth, less than 5 percent of the ocean below the surface has actually been seen, let alone explored. Now, using the geogrpahic information system (GIS), marine scientists are gaining new insights into a once-mysterious world. About the Author: Dawn J. Wright is Professor of Geography and Oceanography at Oregon State University and a leading expert in the use of GIS as applied to marine and coastal regions. She is the editor of Undersea with GIS and co-editor of Marine and Coastal Geographical Information Systems.

Astrid J. Scholz is Ecological Economist and Vice President of Knowledge Systems for Ecotrust in Portland, Oregon.
