The Place of University Extension (Classic Reprint)

A clear, wide‑angle look at how education serves the citizen as well as the student.

This book argues that the field of education must include a strong, dedicated way to raise national character through race knowledge and practical citizenship. It explains why schools and universities alone can’t fill all needs and why new agencies are needed to reach adults in their everyday lives.

The author traces the shifting roles of families, churches, clubs, and other social forces in shaping learning. He details how education has become highly differentiated, creating gaps that University Extension can fill. The discussion covers how knowledge moves from scholars to citizens, and why visualizing race knowledge makes learning real and useful in daily life.

• Understand three parts of education: training for work, preparation for citizenship, and preparation for specialized study.
• See how race knowledge and practical knowledge differ from classroom, bookish learning.
• Learn how University Extension aims to coordinate with schools and universities to educate the public.
• Explore how social institutions shape national character and everyday action.

Ideal for readers curious about how education can strengthen citizenship and national life, beyond classrooms and lecture halls.
