About this Item
xiv, [48] pp.; tall folio (15 x 9.75 in.), full red cloth with Marie Antoinette's arms blocked in gilt on the upper and lower covers, ruled border on the covers, title and fleur de lis ornaments on the spine and turn-ins all in gilt. The marbled endpapers and her bookplate are part of this reproduction. The petitions were made to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette by French army officer Edme-Louis Desbans to secure a lieutentant officer position; they are decorated with elaborate pen and wash drawings by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, the artist perhaps best known for his amazing contemporary hand drawings of works of art in the catalogues of the Paris art salons and auction houses. Printed and produced by Santiago Saavedra, Ediciones El Viso in Madrid. Printed for presentation to the members of the Roxburghe Club by Jayne Wrightsman. As new copy. Barker 279.
