A Plain Introduction to the Criticism of the New Testament Vol. I.

A Plain Introduction to the Criticism of the New Testament, Vol. I, by Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener, is a foundational work in the field of textual criticism. This comprehensive volume is designed to introduce readers to the scientific examination of New Testament manuscripts in order to establish the most accurate version of the biblical text. Scrivener's work focuses on the methods used to assess the reliability of various manuscripts, ancient versions, and early church writings, as well as the principles of comparing textual variants. In this volume, Scrivener provides a detailed overview of the sources available for New Testament textual criticism, including the Greek manuscripts, lectionaries, and ancient translations such as the Latin Vulgate, Syriac, and Coptic versions. He outlines the history of manuscript transmission and highlights the differences found among them, offering insights into how scribal errors, marginal notes, and other changes affected the text over centuries. Scrivener also explores the contributions of early church fathers and scholars who preserved and interpreted the New Testament in its early years.
