Map. Uncolored lithograph. 16 1/8 x 20 inches. Expertly backed with archival Japanese tissue. Minor toning and foxing along original fold lines. Re-issue map of the famous Mangin-Goerck map 1803 of New York City, 53 years later -in 1856. The first edition was officially commissioned by the City of New York after the Revolution. The grid plan design by the map maker was rejected by the City and the map was not used. Only a handful of examples survived. Includes a reference to 45 buildings and the Seal of the City. Excellent private dock notations in the East River. Casimir Goerck and Joseph Francois Mangin proposed the first real estate map, hoping to show houses and lots. Rather than an actual map, an idealized projection or re-design was made. Seller Inventory # 322141
