Rubbing and scratches to boards, with mild edgewear. Nineteenth century bookplate of Blois, central France, girls' school to front pastedown. Small private library shelf tag tipped onto front free-endpaper, with pencil bibliographic notations. Slight foxing to title page and front and rear prelims, but almost none within. Otherwise, apart from a bit of creasing here and there, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of a scarce copy of this tome. OCLC (No. 409084629) locates only three copies worldwide, at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (BnF), Bibliotheque Municipale de Lyon and the Swiss National Library in Berne, Switzerland. ~CC~ Under an 1803 agreement with Napoleon, Pope Pius VII got most church relations with Switzerland restored, but the Republic of Geneva wasn't included in the settlement, and instead was annexed to France. Under the Concordat, its Catholic inhabitants (now including French officials) were for the first time allowed a parish church in the city and a resident priest, the author of the book for sale here, the spirited Abbe Jean-Francois Vuarin, who served as self-appointed champion of Catholic rights in Geneva for the next several decades.…
