Swan, four full page plates, modern half leather, 8.5 x 5.5 , 8vo. In good condition. Modern half leather finely bound with yellow, green and purple marbled wraps. Lovely. Small scuffs and imperfections to surface of leather. Minor rubbing to corners of boards. Fresh end papers clean and bright. All edges marbled. Light toning throughout with scattered foxing. Offsetting from plates. Tissue guards intact, albeit offset and toned. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. A lovely copy of this important work on the history and modification of landscape. Steuart (1759-1836) sits fro the most part in the mainstream of picturesque thought he was savaged for his advocacy of the oval and circle as a natural form which hearkens back to earlier platonic ideals. He devoted much of his life to literary pursuits and his estate, Allanton, in Scotland. He was favored by Sir Walter Scott, who had visited him. Steuart s method of transplanting was tried with great success in England and Ireland.
