Playing Chord Progressions: English Edition

Joff Jones' Playing Chord Progressions: English Edition is a guitar instructional guide for guitarists who want to understand and work with the chord progressions that form the foundation of songs. Focused on practical chord knowledge, the book explores ways to simplify progressions, substitute chords, and transpose songs into different keys, making it a useful reference for instruction, practice, arranging, and everyday music making.

The guide presents its material with Guitar TAB and chord boxes, combining visual chord information with instruction centered on how progressions function. It keeps essential concepts together in a focused reference that can be used alongside a guitar during practice or arranging. The emphasis remains on understanding relationships between chords and applying that knowledge when working with songs.

Rather than treating chord progressions as patterns to recognize without context, the material helps connect practical guitar playing with music theory concepts. Exploring simplification, chord substitution, transposition, added-note chords, and diminished seventh resolutions can broaden the ways a guitarist approaches harmony while providing ideas for learning songs, adapting music to another key, and shaping accompaniment. These concepts also support creative exploration when arranging or developing musical ideas on guitar.

As both an instructional resource and focused guitar reference, Playing Chord Progressions brings together concepts that can be revisited during personal practice, arranging, and performance preparation. Its practical treatment of guitar harmony also makes it a thoughtful gift for a guitarist interested in chord progressions, transposition, substitution, and the theory behind how chords work together.
