There's a Playlist for That.: How to Use Music to Enter the State You Need

How to Use Music to Enter the State You Need
By Jason McIlrath

Most of us treat music as something we react to.

But what if you could use it intentionally?

There’s a Playlist for That is a practical guide to using music as a tool for shaping attention, energy, and momentum. Instead of waiting for the right mood to appear, this book shows how carefully structured playlists can help you enter the mental state you need—whether that’s motivation, focus, calm alertness, creativity, or recovery.

This isn’t about miracle songs or productivity hacks. It’s about understanding how rhythm, repetition, and sequence influence how we think, move, and work.

Inside the book you’ll learn:

• Why playlists work better than single songs for focus and momentum
• How tempo, texture, and rhythm affect attention and energy
• The simple structure behind effective playlists: arrival, ramp, sustain, and release
• How to build playlists that support motivation, deep work, creativity, confidence, and recovery
• How to avoid common mistakes that make most “focus playlists” fail

Each chapter focuses on a specific state of mind and shows how to construct a playlist that supports it. Companion QR codes connect you to curated playlists so you can experience the concepts immediately while keeping the book itself timeless.

There’s a Playlist for That is for anyone who wants to work with music more intentionally—whether you’re writing, studying, exercising, creating, or simply trying to move through the day with greater clarity and momentum.

You don’t always control the circumstances around you.

But you can often control the sound environment you step into.

And sometimes, the right playlist is enough to change the state you’re in.
