A Plea for a National Museum and Botanic Garden: to Be Founded on the Smithsonian Institution, at the City of Washington

A Plea For A National Museum And Botanic Garden: To Be Founded On The Smithsonian Institution, At The City Of Washington by William Darlington presents an 1841 address arguing for the prudent use of James Smithson’s bequest to establish a national institution in Washington for the increase and diffusion of knowledge. Darlington contends that a national seminary, observatory, or museum alone would be insufficient, and instead proposes a comprehensive National Institution that combines a Botanic Garden, a Museum of Natural History, and an allied department for scientific and artistic apparatus. The central aim is to collect specimens, models, and agricultural knowledge, making them publicly accessible to promote science, education, and practical welfare. He envisions government support through the Smithsonian bequest, with management free from partisan manipulation, and expects cooperation from existing national bodies. The vision emphasizes universal access, neutral public space, and the cultivation of intellectual and moral improvement among citizens. He argues this approach would elevate national character and place the United States among leading nations for science and culture. The address remains a persuasive constitutional and civic argument for a national monument to knowledge.
