12mo. [1], xvi, 301 pages, [1]. Full leather binding with gilt ruled borders on the covers. Raised bands and title on the spine. All edges gilt. Leather is lightly worn and rubbed on the front cover and joints. A few scattred brown spots. Inscription written on the front blank end sheet reads - "First book sold in the English department of the new store. Bought by Dewitt Miller August 7 - 1899 [signed] A. C. McClurg & Co. (initials) AMC?" (possibly initialed by A. C. McClurg?). On the rear paste down is the previous owner inscription - Dewitt Miller Cross River Westchester Co., N. York.". Illustrated ex-libris bookplate of Rixley Smith on the front paste down. From wikipedia: "The A. C. McClurg & Co. was destroyed in an 1899 fire, but McClurg financed its reconstruction. The new structure, designed by Holabird & Roche, is now recognized as a historic place. At the time of his death, A. C. McClurg & Co. was the largest book and stationery house in the West and was among the largest in the country". The previous owner of this copy, Dewitt Miller, was a known educator, journalist, and book collector (see wikipedia). Seller Inventory # 27747
