Plutarch Lied (Paperback or Softback)

"Plutarch Lied" is a provocative and insightful critique of military leadership and historiography during the First World War. Written by Jean de Pierrefeu, who served within the French General Staff's press department, the work challenges the idealized and often misleading narratives propagated by high-ranking military officials during the conflict.

The book argues that the traditional, heroic portrayal of generals-reminiscent of the classical biographies by Plutarch-was used to mask strategic blunders, the profound disconnect between command and the front lines, and the mechanical reality of modern industrial warfare. Pierrefeu provides a rare insider's perspective on the internal workings and bureaucratic culture of the French Army during one of its most critical periods. By dismantling the myths of military genius, he offers a sobering analysis of strategy and the human cost of the Great War.

"Plutarch Lied" remains an essential text for readers interested in military history, the psychology of command, and the roots of post-war disillusionment. It stands as a landmark work that transformed how the public perceived the conduct of war and the accountability of those who direct it.
