The title of this book, the Poacher and the Gamekeeper, came about to emphasise the safety challenges to a senior manager from industry and a government enforcer. The senior manager has been responsible for hundreds of employees and budgets of several million pounds and encompasses health and safety as a prime business function because he believes that it is of value to his business and employees as well as those who, whilst are not employed, can be affected by the business activities. The government regulator seeks compliance with health and safety law and acknowledges that a safe place of work is of value to everybody and all organisations and that there are potentially serious implications for those who fail.
The authors have worked together whilst on ‘opposite sides of the fence’ and both believe in the welfare of people at work and those who can be affected by workplace activities. With that in mind, they have combined their knowledge and experiences to draw together lessons learned and promote leadership management for health and safety in the workplace. Therefore, this book is highly significant to everybody involved in any type of business or industry because while it focuses on health and safety, the concepts identified apply to every aspect of any business. However, the need for leadership, ownership and strong corporate culture values are paramount.
