Seven Years' War Pocket Atlas Featuring Gibson and Kitchin MapsIn a Nice Contemporary Red Calf BindingFirst published in London during the height of the Seven Years' War, Andrew Dury's miniature atlas served as a portable compendium of world geography for British readers following global military campaigns. The atlas features regional maps with bilingual titles and subtitles in English and French, engraved by prominent London cartographers including John Gibson and Thomas Kitchin. The atlas is especially noted for its coverage of North America, exemplified by Gibson's double-page folding map of Canada. This plate details the contested frontier of the French and Indian War, delineating British and French colonial claims, Indigenous tribal territories (including the Six Nations, Hurons, and Outaouais), and crucial military posts such as Fort Duquesne and Fort Niagara. Mythical features of the interior, such as the imaginary islands of Philippeaux and Pontchartrain in Lake Superior, remain recorded alongside accurate hydrography of the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes basin.Dury published the atlas from his shop in Duke's Court, St. Martin's Lane, offering it in collaboration with major print sellers Robert Sayer and Carington Bowles. Issued in multiple editions (sometimes bound in oblong format) in the 1760s, the work reflects the peak of mid-18th-century London map trade collaboration. The present example, in a compact portable duodecimo format, is particularly nice. With the following maps:The WorldEuropeAsiaEast IndiesAfricaThe West Coast of AfricaNorth AmericaSouth AmericaCanadaWest IndiesGreat Britain & IrelandEnglandScotlandLACKS IRELANDSpainPortugalFrance in GeneralFranceFlandersSwitzerland.…
