Poems: Chiefly Dramatic

Poems: Chiefly Dramatic by Thomas Hill Lowe. This volume collects dramatic and lyrical poems that blend classical themes with Romantic sensibilities. The collection opens with a preface by the editor, who signs as T. H. L. and explains his modesty about revising the pieces, while acknowledging their freshness and potential for public reception. Among the pieces are Cephalus and Procris, a lyrical drama drawn from myth, and a sequence of other dramatic poems and odes such as Joan of Arc in Prison, An Evening Ode, and The Death of Montreal. The work interweaves mythological settings, pastoral imagery, and grave reflections on love, fate, and virtue, often exploring the tension between mortal passions and divine or cosmic powers. Published in London by William Pickering in 1840, the volume reflects Lowe’s classical influences and his Romantic-era interest in heroic figures, tragedy, and the exploration of moral and existential questions through verse and drama.
