Original tooled blue cloth gilt, stout 12mo ( approx 6.75" x 4.5" ), bevelled edge boards, all edges gilt, pp.xii, 564. New edition in one volume. Illustrated with engraved frontis portrait, other plates in text. Eliza Cook ( 1818 - 1889 ) was a self taught author and poet, an advocate for political freedom for women and self improvement through education as seen through her association with the London Chartist movement. Attractive tooled gilt binding to cover and spine a little faded but gilt reasonably distinct. Light wear to spine ends, and a small split to cover spine seam about halfway up. Old armorial bookplate to inside cover with owners name pencilled on. Hinge cracked here in endpapers and in a coople of other places intext leaving text shaky in places but remaining intact. Text generally clean but occasional minor finger maqrks. Inscription to rear of front endpaper dated 1863. Overall a good copy.
