About this Item
An attractively bound edition of the collected poetry of the Anglo-Irish writer and poet Oliver Goldsmith. First thus, the first edition of this particular format. Oliver Goldsmith spent the majority of his life in debt and produced a large literary output as a hack writer for many publishers of London. He was referred to by Horace Walpole as 'an inspired idiot'. Includes one of his foremost works, the pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village'. Complete with 40 gilt bordered, colour woodblock illustrations by Birket Foster and H. N. Humphreys, the former of whom was incredibly popular in Victorian Britain, famed for his idyllic images of rural England. In a full morocco binding with attractive gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, generally smart with some shelfwear and just a little rubbing to the boards and spine. Hinges are slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages that have just the occasional handling mark. Very Good. Seller Inventory # LTH20-F-21
