Green calf with bright gilt border decorations on front and back, deeply stamped gilt lettering on front. Spine has 6 brown leather panels with elaborate gilt decorations in 5 and a brown leather title label with gilt lettering in the 6th. All page edges with extremely bright gilt. Book is tight and square and relatively sharp-cornered. Fine heavy paper for marbled endpapers. Minimal markings or flaws inside or out, other than a small area of the leather at the top of the back that was rubbed away. Also some mild soiling to the green leather on front and back from use. Small name of prior owner in pencil on FFEP. Tissue-guarded frontispiece is striking b/w illustration by Byam Shaw, as are the other illustrations throughout. Title page printed in red and black.
