The Poetical Works of Christopher Smart: Volume III. A Translation of the Psalms of David

In this volume, the editor focuses on the Christianizing tendencies of Smart's Psalm translations, comparison of Smart's methods with those of earlier Psalm versifiers, demonstration of the connections in idea and expression between Smart's Pslams and mid-eighteenth century Anglican Evangelicalism and the use of New Testament themes and images. Christopher Smart's aim in translating the Psalms was to try and poetically reform the liturgy. Christopher Smart (1722-1771) was an English poet, whose works include A Song to David and Jubilate Agno, both of which were at least partly written during his confinement in an insane asylum.
