Cloth, VG. 3 volumes. 364pp, ix+371pp, 381pp+2pp publishers catalogue, errata slips to all three volumes at rear, pasted in to volume I & II are two clipped SIGNATURES of the author, one with 'Chairman' underneath, ownership signature of Elizabeth Rider ( the gift of her affectionate Papa Xmas 1854 ), cloth rubbed at edges, and with a little loss to the head of each spine, a nice set. Collected works of the Scottish poet Montgomery, for whom, according to the DNB, greatness cannot be claimed. James Montgomery [ 1771 - 1854 ] Scottish born hymn writer, poet and editor, who eventually settled in Sheffield. He was raised in the Moravian Church and theologically trained there, so that his writings often reflect concern for humanitarian causes, such as the abolition of slavery and the exploitation of child chimney sweeps. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Engravings on steel (illustrator). Undated but Circa 1870 - Red leather covers and spine embossed in gold on spine and front (front has an embossed cupid in bottom right hand corner.) Edges and corners of covers and spine rubbed and worn. Internally very clean and tight no foxing whatsoever.
