This is a handsome, Civil War-era copy of "The Poetical Works of JOHN MILTON" together with "The Life of Milton, Abridged from Bishop Newton." 1866; George Routledge and Sons; London. Illustrated with full-page plates by William Harvey. The book is beautifully bound in full leather with gilt borders along the perimeter of the covers, five raised bands with gilt lettering and accents on the spine, marbled end papers, intricate gilt decorations along the edges of the inside covers, and gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. "A New Edition, Carefully Revised from the Text of Thomas Newton." Included is "PARADISE LOST."

Condition:
Clean covers and spine. There is some scuffing to the leather at the right edge of the front cover, and at the left and right edges of the spine. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Wear to 3 of the cover corner tips. Tight binding. Both covers are firmly attached. A 1" strip of the leather at the bottom-right corner of the spine has partially split from the front cover - despite the partial split, the front cover remains securely in place. Nice interior - the pages are clean with no notable issues found. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only some mild foxing to some of the illustrated plates; heavier foxing to the blank back-side of the frontispiece and to the front end paper that precedes it. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
