Condition: Good+ to VG- BOOK INFO Published circa 1850 by George Virtue in New York. First edition thus (first publication of Byron's collected works by the publisher). Bound in contemporary 1/2 black morocco. Boards with gilt ruling; spine with raised bands and some light gilt work and gilt lettering. All edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers, which were quite fashionable circa 1830s-1850s. Ownership name of "Erastus Gould" in gilt at foot of spine. Heavy royal octavo, 9 3/4" x 7" x 2.5" thick. Collated and complete: viii, 820 pp.; 52 steel-engraved plates and 1 facsimile handwritten letter. Poems arranged in two columns on the page. PROVENANCE Erastus Franklin Gould (July 1, 1822 ? June 2, 1896) was an American businessman and banker during the 19th-century. Born in Oswego County, New York, he became a successful businessman in the banking industry in Minneapolis, Minnesota before moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1886. CONDITION REPORT The book is in G+ to VG- condition. Binding a bit strained. Hinges and joints are firm. Rubbed boards and edges. Corners bumped. Some offsetting from leather turn-ins. Some gilt tarnishing. Most pages range from white to toned, a few sections browning/heavily oxidized. Foxing to text block and plates, heaviest on and near plates. Dusty and grubby endpapers. Signs of handling on occasion like bent corners and smudges; water spots along a margin in a few locations. No writing, ex libris marks or bookplates. ABOUT THE POET George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (1788 ? 1824) was one of the major figures of the Romantic movement and is regarded as being among the greatest British poets. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narratives Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Later in life, Byron joined the Greek War of Independence to fight the Ottoman Empire, for which Greeks revere him as a folk hero. He died leading a campaign in 1824, at the age of 36, from a fever contracted after the first and second sieges of Missolonghi. .
