Thomas Campbell's collected poetical works in a charming full pebbled calf binding, featuring lovely wood-cuts throughout. Thomas Campbell was a Scottish poet in the late-eighteenth/early-nineteenth-century, known for his 1799 didactic poem in heroic couplets 'The Pleasures of Hope,' and his numerous patriotic war songs. Aside of his poetry, Campbell was also known as first president and founder of the Clarence Club, and co-founder of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland, as well as one of the first to plan the founding of University College London. The present work contains his collected poetical works, with notes and a biographical sketch by Rev. W. A. Hill. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Campbell and other wood-cuts in text from designs by HarveyIn a charming full black pebbled calf binding. Complete with half title. From the library of Frederick Charles Romer, Colonel in the Buffs unit of the British Army during the First World War. His bookplate features to the front pastedown. Inscribed by Romer's father to the front free endpaper to his wife Hannah Romer, dated 1872. In a charming full pebbled calf binding with five raised bands and intricate gilt tooling to the spine and boards, gilt to the edges, new endpapers. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor rubbing to the spine and extremities. Frederick Charles Romer bookplate to the front pastedown. Inscribed by Romer's father to his wife Hannah Romer to the front free endpaper, dated 1872. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting to the first and last few leaves only, otherwise the pages are bright and clean throughout.
