This 6.625 x 9.875 inch, 747 page hardcover book is the 1863 printing of this title by D. Appleton and Company of New York as indicated on the title page. This copy is in very good condition with its handsome dark-brown leather covers still in beautiful condition after one hundred and fifty years. The leather shows rubbing on the bottom edges and at the corners and spine foot and crown but the binding overall is very nice, tight, and clean with gilt lettering on front panel and spine, all edges gilt, and with raised bands on the spine. The interior shows striking marbled endpapers and then the text pages are in at least very good condition with only the issue of foxing as a real condition issue. Most of the text pages are free of foxing but the different paper used for the engravings show considerable foxing. There are eight full-page engravings each protected by an intact tissue guard. This volume, dating from 1863, is still in remarkably nice condition with the binding tight and a handsome example of book craft from that era. 747 pages.
