The complete edition of this work in a full morocco binding, with gilt detailing to the boards, spine and square. All edges gilt. Presentation inscription to the front blank, dated 1881, to H. M. Smith. Stamp of Maynard Smith and Outram Smith Library to the front blank. The Rev. Herbert Maynard Smith (1869-1949) served as Canon of Gloucester Cathedral, and was also the author of the Inspector Austin Frost detective novels.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and seven further plates. Collated, complete. An anthology of the poetry of the notable British poet William Cowper, from the Lansdowne Poets series published by Frederick Warne and Co. This edition includes a prefatory memoir of Cowper, as well as explanatory notes.Undated, dated through copies held at the British Library. In a full morocco binding. Externally, smart, with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Library inscription to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. Prize for High Marks awarded to Ethel Moir, Christmas 1904.? Some mild foxing to main title page and tissue guard, a couple of minor spots/marks to prefatory memoir and some foxing to last page. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside.
