THE POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM COWPER 1854 2 VOLS ALL LEATHER GORGEOUS. Lest I be mis-understood, I am getting on in years and am listing all of my book collection (eventually, and it is going to take some time!), please find another item of which I have always enjoyed seeing on my bookshelf. On offer here: The Poetical Works of William Cowper with a section titled: With Life, Critical Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes by the Rev. George Gilfillan. These two small leather-bound volumes (5 ¾ x 9 inches, 416 & 428 pages respectively) were published by James Nichol of Edinburgh, dated 1854. They are bound in full smooth calf (?) leather with gilt framing and five raised bands on the gilt decorated spine. The endpapers are decorated in marbled paper and so too, the page ends. Condition: These two books are in very good condition. There has been some wear to the leather boards especially to the corners and spine tips. The decorative spines remain clean and attractive. Inside, there is a handwritten gift inscription and a bookseller s (Galloway & Porter of Cambridge) label on the front endpaper. There are also inked gift notations on both title pages. The early and late pages of both volumes show some light foxing, doubtless due to the acids of the binding glues, but this issue does not get into the pages of the books themselves. All the hinges are intact, but the binding of Volume I is cracked at the first page albeit without affecting the integrity of the bindings which are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library.
