About this Item
A beautifully illustrated poetical anthology from prolific poet, William Cowper. Second edition. Featuring several plates, illustrated by Birket Foster. William Cowper was a English Poet born in 1731. An extremely successful poet, he could indeed be considered a forerunner to the romantic movement of 18th century. In later life, after being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper found emotional and creative refuge in the Evangelical Church, giving him the inspiration to write hymns. He is also known for writing numerous anti-slavery poems, and his work was often quoted by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement of the 20th century. Rebound in embellished calf binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, lightly rubbed to the spine and extremities. Front hinge is very slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, aside from absent endpapers. Bright, with spotting to the first and last pages. Good. Seller Inventory # LTH26-C-5
