The Poets And Poetry Of Europe. With Introductions And Biographical Notices

Across borders, poetry travels. Europe sings in many tongues. In The Poets and Poetry of Europe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow gathers a european poetry anthology that opens the continent's imagination to English readers. These are classic poems of europe presented as a translated poetry collection with elegant english verse translations, alongside lucid introductions that frame each tradition. Dip in for a single lyric, or follow the thread of a nation; the arrangement invites browsing, making the book as welcoming on the bedside table as in a seminar room in seasons of reading. Longfellow's literary criticism and biography is direct and humane, offering biographical notes on poets from the medieval courts to the flowering of nineteenth century europe and its romantic era poets. The result is both a pleasure to read aloud and a practical comparative literature study: how nations rhyme, how legends migrate, how love, faith, exile, and revolution are voiced differently yet felt the same. First published when european romantic literature was reshaping taste on both sides of the Atlantic, this volume became a touchstone for readers discovering foreign masters through translation. It remains a trusted college literature reference for students, writers, and anyone building a personal canon, and it makes a thoughtful poetry lovers gift edition for collectors who value context as much as cadence. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today -- a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
