Soft cover. Condition: Good. Walt Kelly (illustrator). 1st Edition. octavo over 120 pp. (no page numbers). The cover is in rough shape with a crumbling spine. The pages are yellowing but all are intact and several pages in the middle have separated from the binding. This book has been read a lot. With care, it could be rebound. This was one of the most popular newspaper comic strips from 1949 to the mid 1970s. The title character of Pogo is an opossum living with other anthropomorphic animals in the Okefenokee swamp somewhere in the southeastern US. The strip was satirical, and Kelly used puns and verbal humour to carry stories lampooning current political figures and satirizing society in general. In its heyday it was the most popular strip of the period. The strip was revived from 1989 to 1993 but was nowhere near as successful as the original. Despite valiant efforts, the writers could not pull off what Kelly did. In this book, Kelly cleverly parodies Mother Goose rhymes and children's songs with a satiric twist. Seller Inventory # 000277
