You Can Be a Point of Light: Volunteering in Your Community

Loux and Wilson put a practical meat on the bones of sound theology in their You Can Be A Point of Light. Each chapter gives example after example of simple people who take each opportunity to help others. Some of the examples are those of everyday housewives who started organizations and movements like MADD. Some are of a grandmother who visits the hurting and needy, or of a father who cleans floors, hauls trash, and washes dishes for those who don't have the time or ability. There are stories of cooking food at a local mission, collecting food for the hungry, counseling at a crisis pregnancy center, visiting prisoners, or writing to prisoners. Each chapter concludes with ideas that encourage the reader to take action on the stories and ideas that they have just read. This book is an excellent guide for pastors and parachurch leaders, and for therapists who want to encourage their clients to get outside themselves and get involved with others. Every story turns on a light in the reader that "I can make a difference in the world," "I can give love and receive love."
