About the Author
Dr. Maya Rockeymoore is a noted policy expert, activist and political scientist who has her pulse on the relationship between politics, policy and community. Currently the Vice President of Research and Programs at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), Dr. Rockeymoore has served as a Senior Resident Scholar at the National Urban League, Chief Of Staff to Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), Professional Staff on the House Ways and Means Committee and as a CBCF Legislative Fellow in the office of Congressman Melvin Watt (D-NC). A dynamic public speaker and insightful commentator, Maya has appeared on C-Span, Black Entertainment Television, National Public Radio, and the Bev Smith Show among several other radio and television shows. She has also been an invited speaker at conferences sponsored by the National Urban League, National Institutes of Health, Families USA, and the American Public Health Association among other organizations. Dr. Rockeymoore! has been quoted by The New York Times, the Associated Press, Cox News Service, Essence, and Self magazine and has had articles published in magazines, journals and newspapers across the country. She is the author of The Political Action Handbook: A How To Guide For the Hip-Hop Generation and co-editor of Strengthening Community: Social Insurance in a Diverse America. Her numerous honors and awards include the Aspen Institute Henry Crown Fellowship, the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in Public Policy and International Affairs, and the Ralph Bunche American Political Science Association Fellowship. A passionate and expert champion of topics such as political participation among youth, Welfare Reform, Social Security, HIV/AIDS, health care and the socio-economic impact of the War on Terrorism, Maya is quickly emerging as one of the most important national leaders of the 21st century.
