About this Item

Paperback. Political Ecology explains the history of environmental politics and its prospects for the future. This highly readable classic is now available in a revised and expanded edition. Political Ecology opens by presenting the history of the state management of the environment, then moves to an overview of the great variety of popular responses to the ecological crisis, before finally discussing the main political tendencies offered by the ecology movement. Ecological activists, Roussopoulos argues, aim for more than protecting the environment; they call for new communities, new lifestyles, and a new way of doing politics. The concluding sections explore how we can channel the aspirations of environmentalism into such political alternatives, and they provide a set of striking examples of successes inspired by social ecology. This edition is updated with a new postscript reflecting on Paris COP21. Is protecting the environment enough? Ecological activists aim for more, Roussopoulos argues. How can new communities, new lifestyles, and new ways of doing politics bring about an ecological society? This revised and expanded edition of the highly readable classic Political Ecology highlights the relevance of environmental politics. About this title

Synopsis

'In this new and greatly expanded edition of the 1991 classic Political Ecology, Dimitri Roussopoulos delves into the century-old history of enviromentalism to explain the failure of the state management of the ecological crisis. He explores the variety of responses of civil society and the prospects for channelling environmentalist aspirations into political alternatives, emphasising the ideas of social ecology and the central role of democratic neighbourhoods and cities in developing alternatives. Ecologists, Roussopoulos argues, aim for more than protecting the environment; they call for new communities, new lifestyles, and a new way of doing politics.' Dimitri Roussopoulos.
