About this Item
A fascinating Kuwait University survey of the priorities, beliefs and attitudes of young people in Arabian Gulf states. Original illustrated wraps with titles in Arabic and English 17x24cm. 191pp Arabic text only. Covers very good with ink annotation to the Arabic side. Interiors mostly fine except for a few top corners turned down, some ink and pencil annotations and underlinings, and on p57 annotation with felt-tip arrow and circled paragraph (the text is still legible). This survey was based on fieldwork in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Kuwait. Noting that political socialisation is a new concept in Arabian Gulf countries, the author recommends that learning and political discipline are introduced in ways that respects local values, traditions and customs, through schools, work and public spaces, and at home. However, this is not straight forward. A few examples of the author's many findings: the author encountered problems obtaining information and cooperation from respondents and officials, and found among Kuwaiti middle school students that they feel loyalty to Islam first, Kuwait second, family third, the Arab Nation fourth, and the extended family fifth, with tribal loyalty among this group. In order of importance, sources of political information came from TV, radio, comrades, then parents. He found a slightly different picture among older students, and that they became even more attached to religion with age. They are very impressed with the major new developments, and more distant from political ideologies and beliefs than their forebears. The author was surprised to find the majority of students did not know the borders of the Arab world, and ignorance of the causes and solutions for the Palestinian issue(focusing on religion as a solution). This looks to be rare, with 9 locations on Worldcat and Jisc. Seller Inventory # 4981
