Politics: The Master Science (Routledge Revivals)

First published in 1969, Politics explores the growing inclination of political scientists to render their work more ‘scientific.’ Aristotle defined politics as ‘the master science,’ viewing it as an activity rooted in knowledge and understanding. Professor Wiseman examines this activity, tracing the evolution of political studies, with particular focus on American political science, which has introduced numerous innovative approaches and areas of interest.

Wiseman begins by defining ‘science’ and ‘scientific method,’ then delves into the extent to which political studies can be considered scientific. He addresses the relationship between politics as an academic discipline and as a practical art, questioning whether political scientists should engage with current issues or participate in practice, either directly or through advisory roles. In the final chapter, Wiseman evaluates the present and future state of political science, emphasizing the importance of democracy understanding the work and implications of scientific advice. This book is essential for scholars and researchers of politics.
