When sudden stiffness and pain change your daily life, understanding what is happening is the first step toward regaining confidence and control.
Waking up with severe shoulder and hip stiffness can be frightening, especially when everyday activities such as getting dressed, lifting your arms, walking, or getting out of a chair suddenly become difficult. For many people, polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) appears unexpectedly and leaves them searching for answers.
Polymyalgia Rheumatica provides a practical, easy to understand resource for anyone diagnosed with PMR, family members supporting a loved one, and individuals seeking a clearer understanding of this inflammatory condition.
This book explains how PMR affects the body, why symptoms often appear suddenly, how doctors diagnose the condition, and what steps can help protect mobility and independence. PMR is an inflammatory disorder that commonly affects adults over fifty, causing stiffness and aching in the shoulders, neck, and hips, often with symptoms that are worse in the morning or after periods of rest.
Inside this guide, you will discover:
- What polymyalgia rheumatica is and how inflammation affects the tissues around the shoulders and hips
- The common symptoms of PMR, including morning stiffness, shoulder discomfort, hip pain, fatigue, and daily movement challenges
- How doctors approach diagnosis through symptoms, physical examinations, laboratory tests, imaging, and evaluation of other possible conditions
- The connection between PMR and giant cell arteritis and the warning signs that require urgent medical attention
- How corticosteroids and other treatment approaches are used to manage symptoms
- Practical strategies for managing medication side effects and supporting long term health
- The role of exercise, physical therapy, nutrition, and daily movement in maintaining function
- Ways to cope emotionally, communicate with healthcare providers, and remain independent while living with PMR
Guidance for caregivers and family members supporting someone with this condition
Unlike resources that focus only on medical explanations, this book takes a whole person approach. It explores not only the science behind PMR but also the real challenges of adapting to changes in movement, energy, confidence, and daily routines.
You will learn how to have more productive conversations with healthcare professionals, understand treatment decisions, recognize important symptoms, and take an active role in managing your health.
This book is not a replacement for professional medical advice or personalized treatment. Instead, it is designed to help you become better informed, ask better questions, and approach your care with greater confidence.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, have been managing PMR for years, or are caring for someone affected by the condition, Polymyalgia Rheumatica offers the knowledge and practical guidance needed to move forward with greater understanding and independence.
A diagnosis may change your routine, but with knowledge, support, and the right strategies, you can continue living an active and meaningful life.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
