The city of Pompeii was destroyed on the 24th August 79 AD. Mount Vesuvius erupted, a little after midday, and buried the city and many of its inhabitants under 20 feet of ash and pumice. Latter-day excavations have revealed the tragedy that occurred in extraordinary detail. This pocket guide to the site is designed to enable the visitor to choose how to use their available time to best advantage. It describes the 57 major points of interest in consecutive order, but to visit all of them takes many hours. The book provides three suggested itineries, covering trips of one and a half, two and a half, and three and a half hours.
