Poor condition. Lacks initial leaves inclusive from ffep to page 10 as well as rear free endpaper and flyleaf or two. Collates as [fp], 11-250, [rp]. As title leaf is lacking book is attributed as being an 1833 Key and Biddle edition with this being fairly certain for OCLC does not cite any other American imprints and the Library of Congress catalog entry cites a matching 250 pages. Hardcover: H 16.5cm x L 10.25cm. Contemporary green cloth stained and rubbed; tearing to cloth at spine center with losses at ends; spine title label missing; board edges worn. Surviving text block still firmly bound but only tenuously attached to boards/spine. Foxing and stains to leaves. Age-toned and stained 1830s bookseller ticket, H 27mm x L 52.5mm, for Columbus, Georgia on front pastedown albeit with some unfortunate text loss - reads as "Sign of the B--- | Four doors from the Columb-- | Sold By | E.S. Norton, | At the Columbus Book-Store, Broad-Street." The ticket's paper and type/font are certainly contemporary to what is seen in other southern bookseller tickets printed in the 1830s-1840s. As Columbus, Georgia was only founded in 1828 this is likely among the earliest tickets for the Chattahoochee River city and Broad Street (now known as Broadway) was the town's business district throughfare paralleling the waterfront. Further affirming that the ticket is for Columbus, Georgia (and not from a similar namesake town in another state) is a March 3, 1832 notice in the Columbus Enquirer newspaper of an E.S. Norton and the Columbus Book-store. Although there are no Moses family markings in this book it was acquired among a collection of 200+ titles descended in that prominent Columbus family who were relatively early city residents having roots in Charleston, South Carolina.
