Popeye in Belgrade Format: Paperback

Set among places of recent upheaval, this striking collection of poetry skillfully documents the aftershock of moral and spiritual earthquakes, often within intimate contexts. Life in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere are juxtaposed with private experiences, combining both public and personal feeling. With a strong focus on how the social and political intrude into individual lives, this anthology also explores a strong thematic element in the presence of music, both as a unique level of meaning and an elusive otherness.

James Sutherland-Smith is a peacekeeping manager in the Balkans. He is the author of At the Skin Resort and In the Country of Birds. He was featured in New Poetries II.
